Comments:  Hi Ms Londhe, I sent several messages to you at your email, where I already detailed how much I admire your site. This is in response to Govind Bhudia's guestbook entry on 12/14/05. The place GandhAra (not Ghandhar) is not related to the name AlexAndros, which was the real name of Alexander III known as Megas Alexandros or the Great. Compare: GandhAra to AlexAnder. The stress on GandhAra is on the syllable with 'r', whereas in Alexander, the syllable with 'n' is stressed as opposed to the one with 'r'. On the other hand, the city name KAndahAr is not derived from Alexander but comes from alterations over time to the original GandhAra which was a large region, like a province, not just a city. SikhAnder is the Indian name for Alexander because an Indian-sounding name could be found that seemed sufficiently similar to it, while Iskandar appears to be the name attributed to him in Islam. The name 'Iskandar' arrived in India with Islam, while the Indian God Skanda was by then already long attested even in Southeast Asian countries. Skanda has nothing to do with Alexander either. The idea that works like the Mahabharata and Indian place names like Gandhara "must be the result of contact with Europe" (Greece in this case), is proof of how much it's sunk into our psyche there can not possibly be a civilization outside of European ones. Hence the celebration of Columbus Day in America, as if America wasn't discovered tens of thousands of years prior to the accidental discovery instigated by Columbus (ignoring the catastrophe in human terms resulting from the latter). By such faulty logic, Mayan, Incan and Aztec civilizations would then only be regarded as civilizations after imbibing European influence (what influence?), prior to which they too, like India, must have been practically non-existent or at best unimpressive!

Comments:  Dear Sushma Ji: Although your collection of information on Hinduism is a good effort, it does not include any references to Arya Samaj, founded by Swami Daya Nand Saraswati. It also does not refer to pioneering vedic contributions of Acharya A C BhaktiVedanta Swami Prabhupada, who founded the International Society for Krishna Cosnciousness [ISKCON] in 1966 in NY, NY, USA. Since its inception, ISKCON has grown to 250 Temples and Farms throughout the world. There are millions who have been encouraged to follow Vedic philosophy after in contact with ISKCON. The essence of teachings is to chant Holy Names of Krishna, viz. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare! Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!! Names of Krishna and He himself are non-different! Your humble servant's servant, Dasanudas. (Note: For information on Swami DayaNand Saraswati refer to chapter on Quotes 250_270 and chapter on Hindu Revivalists. Information on ISKCON founder Swami Prabhupada will be included in the next update).

Comments:  Namaste Sushmaji, First of all this is one of the best sites one can come across. I would like to attract some comments from fellow visitors of this site, regarding" Ghandhar ". I wonder if this name has any connections with " Alexander ", since there are so many other names that derive from this name, e.g. Sikhander(abad), Iskhander, kandhahar or Skandhar etc. and the very name I have mentioned above "Ghandhar" which may have derived from the word " Alexander ". If this name has any connections with the Greek conqueror than the Ghandhar of the Mahabharata could not be pre Greek era. There are some claims made to the present day Kandhahar of Afghanistan, that Sakuni and Ghandhari were from there (avaganastan). I have also seen a different Ghandhar situated somewhere in the North West Frontier region near to Taxila. If this was the case than the dating of Mahabharata could be debatable. I may be wrong, but would love interact with fellow visitors of this fantastic site. Govind.

Comments:  I am most interested to find out why do you not refer to or cover the voluminous work of L. A.Waddell who wrote extensively on the supposed Aryans and the history of India. I am unable to find a single reference to this scholars work, and yet he was erudite in several Indic languages and cannot be simply classed along with the other Western thinkers and apologists that you often cite. Waddell was surely one of the great Indic scholars and wrote extensively on India and on Tibet, who had mastered the various ancient languages, had decoded inummerable Vedic myths and tracked the tribal movements across the world. His work on etymology and philology is exemplary. Whatever one makes of his thesis and conclusion, it seems imperative that his work is canvassed on this site of yours. He towers above the other "Aryan" theorists that you mention. Therefore, it seems unreasonable to not mention or critique his work on this fascinating and important subject. Waddell is the author of the following books: A Sumer Aryan Dictionary Among the Himalayas The British Edda Buddhism of Tibet Or Lamaism Egyptian Civilization Its Sumerian Origin and Real Chronology Indosumerian Seals Deciphered Lamaism in Sikhim Lhasa and Its Mysteries With a Record of the Expedition of 1903 to 1904 Makers of Civilization in Race and History The Aryan Origin of the Alphabet: Disclosing the Sumero Phoenician Parentage of our Letters Ancient and Modern The Phoenician Origin of Britons Scots and Anglo Saxons Discovered by Phoenician and Sumerian Inscriptions in Britain by Pre Roman Briton Coins Tibetan Buddhism: With its Mystic Cults, Symbolism and Mythology, and in Its Relation to Indian Buddhism. I would appreciate a response to this question to my personal email address... Many thanks for the excellent site and work. Michael T. (Note: Thank you very much for your information about L A Waddell. I was not aware of his research. I am in the process of buying these books. I will include his research in the next update).

They were trying to tell different religions in one-line sentences. They wrote: Hinduism: worship of 300 million gods. Christianity: worship of god who is lovable and approachable. This clearly shows how much one knows about our religion and the feeling of superiority with out a base.

Comments:  Sushama, Thank you so much for this beautiful site where you've brought together such a wealth of information related to Hinduism. You've done us all an immense service, especially at such unhappy times when so many people are trying to go out of their way to cast our beliefs and way of life in a negative light. I hope that Hindus, Indians who have left Hinduism without really having looked into it first, and anyone else to whom Hinduism may appeal, will come and read through your site and gain a better understanding of it and of India's history. Your site might also prevent less informed people from referring to any endeavours by Hindus to retain their religion in the face of aggressive conversion activities as 'Hindu fundamentalism'. I also hope that Indian children, so used to manufactured history and impressed with a false and ugly picture of the Hindu religion by so-called 'secular' Indian schools and institutions, may realize that there are a great many good things about the religion that have been hidden from them. Perhaps your site will change Indian parents' inactive stance on this matter, and push them into positive action, so that they will either teach their children such things themselves, or help to build schools that no longer indulge in blatantly rewritten histories and mudslinging at Hinduism. Thank you greatly. (Note: Due to space requirements, the rest of the long message has been posted in the chapter - visitor's emails. Please refer to it. Thanks).

Comments:  Undoubtedly Great Work. I would wonder what could be the purpose of such a detailed and tremendous work. If it is to educate the world about Hinduism then we should be doing in such away that while telling about Hinduism we do not attack other's ideology by saying "Prophetic religion is severe, militant, uncompromising, intolerant, while mystic religions are renouncing, and peaceful." For others to listen to you, you have to make them receptive. And one will not listen to you if you start talking bad about one while talking good about you. I hope my suggestion shall be taken in good spirit. Thanks and Regards. (Note: For more information on Prophetic religions and their followers subsequent actions like Jihad and Crusades, refer to chapter on Glimpses VI, Introduction to Hinduism, Islamic Onslaught, European Imperialism and Conversion).

Comments:  In the past I have posted, thanking you for this enlightenment you have given to us Hindus. I just finished reading the chapter on "European Imperialism" and to tell you the truth I'm boiling with anger against all the rapist, murders, and thieves of my motherland. I'm especially angry with Jesus Christ for saying this-- that is if he really did. " Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and the son, and of the Holy Ghost." (mat.xxvii 1 9) This is what made, and is still making Christians preach conversion. That was also why so many Christian’s fanatics went to all over India preaching conversion and in the process killing millions of our people, especially in Goa where, sorry I can't call a murderer a saint, Francis Xavier murdered so many Hindus. At present I'm reading the chapter on Dwaraka, and I noticed the use of the English spelling of Bhagwan Krishna instead of our Sanskrit Krsna. I know English is imbedded in most of us, but at least we should try to use our Sanskrit way as much as possible. Thanks again for educating us on the history of our Motherland. Ayushmanbhav--long live.

Comments:  I enjoyed being able to read more about Hinduism, having visited India a few times. I have a very strong opinion about the future of Christianity, which is that it will eventually dissolve and become indistinguishable from Hinduism. This is simply because Christianity is in the process of splintering. It takes a great effort to keep native ideas, cultural differences from mixing into Christian thought. For over 1400 years the church fought to keep heresy (un allowed religious or social philosophy) out of their domains. Once the Church of England was set up (the same church with the bishops that deny Jesus-- how silly and how unsurprising) and the Lutherans split off successfully, Christianity became broken. Second factor was that the bible became translated into common languages, the printing press allowed more people to own bibles. Soon "every man was his own pope". I think as the Catholic Church weakens (and it will), Christianity will become more chaotic and destroy itself because most people practicing it will lack the understanding of it to withstand real challenges to their beliefs. Therefore they rely on the precise words in their translation to know what to believe, and that never works. Instead they resort to fighting. Do not think Hinduism is so different from Christianity. I have studied both, seen holy sites in both, and I really see only a difference in history and politics. If anything, it will be swallowed as so many other religions before it. And it is not such a bad meal--Jesus's teachings are those of a true guru. (Note: message has been shortened to fit in the space).

There is though a part that I am not sure off, which is Hinduism as the oldest religion. I understand that goes to Jainism, which is considered to be time immemorial. Lord Adinath who is the first thirthankar of Jainism is known to on this earth over 1000 of centuries ago and the last thirthakar Lord Mahaveer was born 2500 years ago. So if you have some information please put it on the web site. (Note: Thanks for the suggestion. Will include some information on Jainism in next update).

Comments:  Dear Friend, For the past five years I have been spending the best part of my time in translating several Sthothras in to English. The idea was two fold: 1.Bring home the majesty of these sthothras to those not knowing Sanskrit 2.Provide a means for our modern day youngsters who are ignorant of Sanskrit and unfortunately many times more confidant in reading English than their mother tongue. Last week I have completed creating a web site www.geocities.com/ramya475 where all my translations(more than 40) are given. This web site contains many great sthothras which include Vishnu Sahasranamam, Lalitha Sahasranamam, Soundarya Lahari, Shivananda Lahari, DEvi Mahatmyam, Sundara Kandam etc. There is also a collection of daily prayers under the heading Nithya Sthothra Parayana. I request all of you to visit the web site and also bring it to the notice of your friends who may be interested. With best wishes, Ramachander.

May God bless you and if by any means I can contribute please don’t hesitate to ask for my humble services. Would love to do something and make my life worthwhile.... With lots of respect and reverence... Charan Vandana, Sunil Jaggi.

Comments:  Dearest Sushmaji, First of all, I have always been an avid fan of your site and have always told people to come here if they want answers. One of the greatest feelings was when I saw one of my old essays quoted on your site "Divide and Conquer", I was really touched since the original essay contained references and footnotes from interviews with the Sikh royal families, thus causing a stir at the University about information not being available to the public about the common heritage of Sikhs and Hindus. Actually, the reason I am sending this message is because I have no idea how to email you. http://www.outlookindia.com/full.asp?fodname=20051010&fname=Pakistan+%28F%29&sid=1. I just wanted you to see this link as it has a lot of information you will find useful for the history section. Again, my deepest Pranam to you, God bless you for this service, which you have done, not only for my generation (when I stumbled upon your site as an Undergraduate) but also for what you have done for future generations and non-Hindus alike. Thank you for your dedication and love of our culture and faith, God bless you. Sincerely, Sumer.

Comments:  This is a wonderful resource for Hindu information and research. I came across this today and realized very quickly that I will be spending a lot of time here. While this is only my first post I did want to introduce visitors to a site that deals with some of the most rare Hindu posters and art prints that I have ever seen. My wife and I went to India about 3 years ago. And while we were there we spent about 4 days in Bombay visiting all the shops and checking out all the Hindu art. It was a load of fun and we'd go back in a heart beat. - PowerfulPosters.com

Comments:  Wonderful site. Your site confirms that there is hope for the revival, the abundance of contributions and rightful acknowledgement of the Vedic Dharma. I am doing research on the origins of the "Ved Shashtra", which in turn leads me to the lost continent of "Lemuria" or "MU". Since we are told that the origins are, rishis in deep meditation receiving them through divine sources, during the eve of mankind. The Vedas are "Apauruseya", meaning they are not of man’s intellect, but divine, or correctly Devan. You are assured I will visit your site regularly, and people please feel free to email me on insight to my query. Jai Hind!

Comments:  What a wonderful site to have come across. It contains precious gems on Hinduism and the design of the site is splendid. Many of the misconceptions regarding our ancient past have been blown away by the extensive research done by the author of the site. To find so much data and information at one place is really incredible and commendable. May Truth Prevail. Jai Hind! Please make available online as many of those books listed in the link 'Recommended Books'. It would be a great service to us who cannot buy those expensive books. Thanks.

Comments:  Hindu Dharam and caste system - Out of 1028 hymns in the Rigveda, only one - Purush Sukta (10.90.11-12) mentions Brahmana, Rajanya, Vaishya & Shudra as being formed from the mouth, arms, thighs & feet of the sacrificial Purush. What perplexed me was that the next two lines (10.90.13) say "Indra and Agni from his mouth were born" & in the next two (10.90.14) "Earth from his feet". How can a poet contradict himself within a space of four couplets? The only explanation possible seems to be that the mention of castes in this hymn is an insertion at a much later time when the powerful Brahmins wanted to portray Vedic sanction for this inequitous social system which was working to their advantage. They being the only group who were able to read the veda, others had no means of checking if their assertion was true. In the Bhagvadgita, there is only one place where the four groups are mentioned in context of their different activities. In Ch 18.41-44, please try to read the original shloka because all the translations I read had distorted what the simple meaning was. The operative word is "Swabhav" & there is absolutely no mention of heredity. All that the poet has said is that those with an intellectual Swabhav are Brahmin, those with an ambitious Swabhav are Kshatriya, those with a commercial Swabhav are Vaishya & those whose Swabhav is serving/helping others are Shudra. There is no mention of any group being bad or untouchable. So I could not find any sanction for the caste system in the Gita. My last piece of evidence is the historical account of Indian society in about 300BC by Megasthenes in his book Indica. He talks about the society organised in seven groups according to occupation & he does not mention any group as being untouchable or outcast. In fact, he does not use the term Shudra at all. Ultimately, I have come to the conclusion that the caste system is not derived from the Sanatana Dharma that originated from the Rigveda. It is very likely that the Brahmin group, because of their literacy & role in religious ritual, became very powerful & ultimately were corrupted by that absolute power to subvert the entire social structure justifying it falsely to be ordained by Rigveda. Manu Smriti was a creation of these power-crazy people as were many post-Vedic texts. It amazes me that with all this evidence in black & white our society is still in turmoil from believing that our Dharma sanctioned the torture of our own brothers & sisters.
