I came upon this site some time ago and was quiet impressed and a friend who was equally impressed sent this to me. I have to say it is so informative and a great site to refer to anyone who wants to know about Yogasana and also a reminder to all who are already practicing it. I think it is high time we Indians make it a point to teach our children Yogasanas right from their childhood as it would have been taught a very long time ago. What a way to better health even in this modern world.

A Tribute to Hinduism is one of the oldest and best websites on Hinduism. I have run several websites in my time, and the first link I've put on all of them is to A Tribute to Hinduism.
I hope that other young Hindus of our generation take up projects like these.

This is truly an amazing site. I have always felt blessed to be born a Hindu. Reading the information on your site simply humbled me for being chosen to be born a Hindu in this lifetime. Do you have a chat room to discuss issues related to Hinduism? I am saddened that Hinduism doesn’t get the exposure it deserves. Then again, those who search will discover its depth and glory, I suppose.
Thank you.
Cheers.

I find this a very informative site. I am aware of the developments and current research in Indian studies, and the site's collection of focus articles with appropriate references lends credibility to the effort. Having said this, I would really be delighted to see a full-fledged discussion/article on the crucial question not adequately tackled: in spite of being one of the most advanced (in technology, philosophy, basic sciences, enterprise, military capabilities, trade, politics) societies, why did the Indians fail to resist the Islamic invasions? If society was so united (with or without the smriti's!) why did it fail to protect groups, which became (willingly or under duress) converted? Why were knowledge and its culture restricted (with prescriptions like the mutilation of the tongue or pouring molten metal into the ears of an individual who is not authorized by his birth to recite or listen to scriptures) to a hereditary group? These are not questions, which can be answered by apologetics. Being an Indian myself (I never mention my family's hereditary gotra, the varna, and the sub branches which are so meticulously maintained - incidentally how will we justify the 100's of sub branches in terms of professional specialization - for my so called varna, the branches should have been identifiable with different academic subject topics! - fortunately now with the Anglicization of our names I can get away without revealing my "birth varna") (Note: Due to space requirements and aesthetics, the rest of the message has been posted in the chapter - visitor's emails. Please refer to it. Thanks).

Hinduism is all about spirituality ~ A deep sense of communion with nature; a way of life beyond purpouseless rituals.
Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life and therefore true believers in the Hinduism philosophy need to be focused on gaining deeper insight of what is the meaning behind the rituals rather than remaining focused on the practicing of the ritual.
Hinduism is all about devoting oneself to discovering the joy of experiencing the truth of Hindu philosophy has accepted all cultures, religion without attempting to dominate other's point of view.
Hindus need to follow this path rather than practicing its culture as a mere ritual (religion), which we need to defend. All religions have been accepted by Hindus emphasize this key point of Hinduism belief which looks at all religions like lovely rivers that have merged with an ocean of humanity nurtured by the philosophy of Hinduism.

Dear Madam,
I read with interest your compilations on Aryan Invasion Theory. You have quoted from my article" Death of the Aryan Invasion Theory". In that article I have tried to show that the Russian (and Soviet) historians never accepted the Aryan Invasion Theory. Thus, it is not correct to blame Marxism-Leninism on this colonial theory propagated by the Anglo-American historians. There is a vast difference that exists between what the so-called Indian 'Marxist' historians say and what Karl Marx and his followers in the Soviet Union wrote.
I have tried to prove in another article, not yet published, that Indian 'Marxists' are not Marxists at all; that is true about the members of the CPI(M) as well.
Romila Thaper said very clearly that she is not a Marxist, but follows the method of Marx. Irfan Habib is a member of the Muslim religious organization, Babri Maszid Action Committee and thus, cannot be called Marxists. In fact, there are great similarities between the opinion of the Indian 'Marxists' historians and the Pakistani historians.
Thus, it is better to call these Indian historians as pro-Pakistani and Pro-British historians rather than 'Marxists' historians, which they are not.
Sincerely,
Prof. Dipak Basu

As a very first step in introducing others to this culture, we must quit referring to any culture that is not mainstream British as an "ism". The vocabulary that has been subtly portrayed to the world by the Brits is to categorize other ways of living and being as "isms" in order to prevent their proliferation after the Crusaders conquered the East.
An appropriate terminology would be to call it "Hindu Dharma". I was first made aware of the discrepancy of the "ism" vs. "Dharma" by an erudite UN official that I met on the plane in 1970. It is painful to see people from our own culture continuing to refer to "Dharma" as an "ism". Please consider revising this oversight and teach others the concept of Hindu Dharma.

Dear Ms Londhe,
Today I finished reading the section on (Conversion) and I can't believe the atrocities committed, and is still continuing with no end in sight, by the various Christian organizations upon the Hindu people in India.
I'm wondering what is preventing the Indian Government from passing a law banning conversion by coercion, bribery, and marriage.
I agree with the person who sent you an email which stated with 700 millions plus Hindus India cannot find an Indian born to run the country. How sad!!!
Another law should be passed-- Only people born in India can be elected as Prime Minster or President-- A law similar to America.
Thank you very much for all the hard work you and those who help put into "Tribute To Hinduism" A ocean of knowledge for not only Hindus but all people of the world,
Pranam, Ayushmanbhav.

Dear Sushmaji, I would like to point out a small observation which could be helpful in alluding to the correct timeline of the Mauryan Empire and by extrapolation indeed the Mahabharata and Ramayana. When the Greeks apparently arrived in India post Alexander (325BC), they described the empire of Chandragupta whom they called Sandrocottus. However they precisely mention that the predecessor of Sandrocottus was Xandarmas (phonetically obviously closer to Chandramas than to Mahapada nanda) and the succesor as Sandrocryptus (similar to Samudragupta than Bindusar). Thus it is more likely that they were talking about Chandragupt of Gupt dynasty and not of Mauryan dynasty. Hence it is clear that traditionally the Indian history and Buddha's period has been wrongly dated as 500 BC when it was actually 1800 BC. Moreover a big misconception is that it was Mauryan Ashoka who instituted Buddhism as a state religion. It was most probably the contemporary Ashoka of Gondana who was a pacific ruler who turned to Buddhism. From Ashoka's rock edicts it is clear that he treated Buddhists and Brahmins with an equal eye. (Note: Thank you very much for your observation).

Hi Ms Londhe,
I sent several messages to you at your email, where I already detailed how much I admire your site.
This is in response to Govind Bhudia's guestbook entry on 12/14/05.
The place GandhAra (not Ghandhar) is not related to the name AlexAndros, which was the real name of Alexander III known as Megas Alexandros or the Great. Compare: GandhAra to AlexAnder. The stress on GandhAra is on the syllable with 'r', whereas in Alexander, the syllable with 'n' is stressed as opposed to the one with 'r'. On the other hand, the city name KAndahAr is not derived from Alexander but comes from alterations over time to the original GandhAra which was a large region, like a province, not just a city.
SikhAnder is the Indian name for Alexander because an Indian-sounding name could be found that seemed sufficiently similar to it, while Iskandar appears to be the name attributed to him in Islam. The name 'Iskandar' arrived in India with Islam, while the Indian God Skanda was by then already long attested even in Southeast Asian countries. Skanda has nothing to do with Alexander either.
The idea that works like the Mahabharata and Indian place names like Gandhara "must be the result of contact with Europe" (Greece in this case), is proof of how much it's sunk into our psyche there can not possibly be a civilization outside of European ones. Hence the celebration of Columbus Day in America, as if America wasn't discovered tens of thousands of years prior to the accidental discovery instigated by Columbus (ignoring the catastrophe in human terms resulting from the latter). By such faulty logic, Mayan, Incan and Aztec civilizations would then only be regarded as civilizations after imbibing European influence (what influence?), prior to which they too, like India, must have been practically non-existent or at best unimpressive!
